From Bunbury and Australind down through Busselton, Dunsborough, Margaret River, Nannup, Bridgetown and Manjimup, the South West is wetter, greener and further from a hire yard than anywhere on the plain. Owning a machine makes sense here because the weather decides when you can work, not a booking calendar.
What the ground does
The coastal strip from Bunbury to Dunsborough is sand over Tamala limestone, with caprock in footings and soakwells. The vineyard country around Margaret River and Wilyabrup is gravelly loam over clay, free-draining and easy to dig. The Blackwood Valley and Darling Range around Nannup and Bridgetown are laterite, clay and granite with slopes and big trees. In the karri country south of Manjimup the red loam is deep and the rainfall means wet-season access is the limiting factor.

Vineyard trenching and replanting, farm dams and soaks, firebreaks in a high-risk region, shed pads, driveways and rural fencing, plus the lifestyle-block landscaping that follows every tree change.
Machines and attachments that suit
The R32 PRO with a cab is the region's workhorse for acreage and vineyard work; the R22 PRO is the towable option; the R57 PRO suits contractors doing batters, dams and site cuts. Full-size RS10 and RS20 loaders run brush cutters and mulchers for fuel reduction. Rubber tracks and a light footprint matter in the wet.
